1. Historic Chloride, New Mexico, was Once a Silver-Mining Town 

Historic Chloride, New Mexico, was originally established more than 100 years ago when Englishman Harry Pye lay claim to the land in the early 1880s. Pye first discovered silver in the canyon upon delivering freight for the United States Army. At the height of its silver mining days, Chloride became known as the center of the Apache Mining District and it was home to a population of nearly two thousand people.  

2. Severa lof Chloride’s Historic Buildings Still Stand 

With such a large population Chloride also needed to have plenty of activities for its inhabitants. In town, inhabitants could find an array of places to visit including a Chinese laundry, post office, butcher shops, restaurants, a stage line, and more. Of these historic buildings, there are still a few that remain for visitors to admire and explore.

3. There Is Still an Active Mine in Chloride  

Although the town’s demise began more than a century ago, there is still an active mine near Chloride. In the early 1980s, the St. Cloud Mines were established to explore silver deposits located near Winston, New Mexico. During this exploration, a zeolite mineral deposit was uncovered. Now, the St. Cloud Mines act as zeolite processing and packaging facilities.
